Ex-Pandoras bassist Kim Shattuck joins the ranks of the Pixies as they launch a gargantuan 2013-14 world tour. (Updated 7/25)
Two weeks ago, we reported that original Pixies bassist Kim Deal said sayonara to her bandmates, 27 years after she responded to Black Francis’ ad in the newspaper classifieds, waltzing into her audition bass-less, having never before played the instrument. On Friday, the Pixies followed up with a bold new single “Bagboy,” their first new tune in 9 years, hinting (hopefully!) at a new wave of material to be premiered on tour.
“Along with everyone’s favorites, we’ll be playing songs that we haven’t played in ages or never played live before,” said Black Francis. “Songs like ‘Brick is Red,’ ‘Havalina,’ ‘Tony’s Theme.’ and ‘Sad Punk.’ We’ve probably rehearsed some 80 songs, so we’ll be able to change up the set at the last minute if we feel like it. We’re all really looking forward to this tour.”
Europeans take note. “Leg One” of the tour hits the pavement in Paris before jamming their way across the crucible of Western civilization. To our dear Pixies: America waits with bated breath.
UPDATE 7/25: The Pixies have extended their tour back into September, hitting the three most populous U.S. cities before heading overseas, where additional dates have been added as well. See the updated list of tour dates below!
