During certain shows, moshing feels a prerequisite, and there seems to forever be a large contingent of fans, at said shows, willing to stop at nothing to get their mosh on. Which helps explain the uproar caused by a certain band’s anti-moshing post on Twitter this week.
On Saturday, Bring Me The Horizon frontman Oliver Sykes, whose band happens to currently be traveling with the Vans Warped Tour, posted to his Twitter:
This was in reference to recent rumors moshing had been completely banned at shows on the Warped Tour. Many metal fans have especially had such thoughts on their minds following Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe’s incarceration for, and eventual exoneration from, the death of moshing fan at the band’s show in the Czech Republic. The harrowing experience left the band announcing fans can no longer join them on the stage during their sets, and Blythe has since released a thoughtful statement on the aggression seen at shows.
Once Sykes’ post hit the Internet, however, and festival promoter Kevin Lyman’s Twitterverse was flooded by angry fans, the truth came out. It is now being said that fans are still allowed to mosh, but any band that encourages it will be held responsible for injuries accrued while the crowd partakes in such aggressive behavior. Said Lyman:
If you do it fine if the bands do it they become responsible 4 all the injuries that occur, people do not take responsibility. In America that leads to many lawsuits…I have been through many, no fun and costly.
It should be interesting to watch the crowd and performer reaction to the new laws being enforced upon all Warped Tour bands. In the meantime, the 2013 tour will continue rolling on throughout the U.S. until December, and will also be appearing in Europe and Australia this year.
