Black is Back
Black Sabbath is a band whose name and music has reached a legendary status. In fact, they are often regarded as the original pioneers of the heavy metal genre, due to their successful list of albums released throughout the ’70s. Though they continued to create music after singer Ozzy Osbourne’s departure in 1979, millions of people have awaited the return of the original Black Sabbath line-up. While drummer Bill Ward did not appear due to a contract dispute, fans can still been excited to see that Black Sabbath’s other three original members have composed an astonishing work of art, titled simply as 13.
To start, one of 13‘s strongest appeals is the fact some songs have been modeled specifically and similarly to early Black Sabbath material, giving it a nostalgic spin. This was accomplished successfully, as it still sounds like brand new material. Most notably, the opener “End of the Beginning” sounds eerily similar to the song “Black Sabbath” from their debut, incorporating a doom-y song structure with appropriate build-ups. Likewise, “Zeitgeist” sounds somewhat similar to the song “Planet Caravan” from their sophomore album Paranoid. In fact, the album ends with the same intro used in their debut, as if to make an ending out of a beginning.
Make no mistake, however; there are certainly brand new qualities to be found on this album. A primary example is the single “God Is Dead?,” which is a bewildering work that must be heard to be believed. It is simply amazing, with creative lyrics, mind-blowing riffs, and monumental build-ups. Another notable track is found near the end, entitled “Damaged Soul,” which contains jaw-dropping guitar solos and atmospheric bass lines. Additionally, the album is different and improved from past Sabbath material in that it sounds much more heavier, well produced, and sinister. Producer Rick Rubin can be credited for resurrecting Sabbath’s classic style and ensuring it did not sound dated.
Consequently, 13 has taken the world by storm, rightfully earning a number one spot in several countries. Black Sabbath is not only back, but have proved that they are still capable of producing masterpieces. This album is not only profoundly recommended, but is an essential listen of any and every fan of heavy metal.
