Not Brutal, Just Cruel
Mumakil is back with their newest album Flies Will Starve. Grindcore, Blastcore, whatever you call it, Mumakil should pronounce themselves as tease-Grind. These guys take the Ed Wood approach when producing their albums: their main problem is too many tracks and not enough substance. By the time the listener engages with a song, the music cuts to an end, leaving one hanging.
The best thing to do with this album is skip it all the way to track 10, “Repudiate”, and start from there to save yourself some frustration. Nothing turned around for Flies Will Starve until this track. Next on the tracklist, “Army of Freaks” showed some hope for the rest of the album. Mulling through the remaining tracks there is some notable technical work in “Wrong Turn” which, followed by “Let the World Burn,” seems as though Mumakil makes a come back after their rush delivery of the bulk of crap that constitutes the first third of the album.
If you are a concertgoer wanting to get into a ton of random fights and punished in the pit by incredibly quick, intense drums and a mutable blend of crunched guitar and base but can’t possibly hold onto the concept of a song for much longer than one and a half minutes, then this is the music for you. For that purpose the album receives two horns, way up, with the exception of the horribly repetitive, minute long “Fucktards Parade”.
Another fun thing to do while listening to Flies Will Starve is beat your head through the driving console of your car during rush hour traffic and steer yourself straight into the nearest ditch or off of a freeway overpass. Whatever you decide to do, you’ve got about 35 minutes and 24 songs to do it in, plenty of time to destroy something and leave a wake of madness.
