The Uncluded, comprised of odd couple Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawson, just released a music video for the second single, “The Aquarium,” off their album Hokey Fright.
The unlikely duo released their first album together early last month. Rock, a critically acclaimed rapper and producer in the alt hip-hop scene, is known for his complex and conscious, albeit somewhat confusing lyrics. Dawson, a solo singer/songwriter and one half of anti-folk duo Moldy Peaches, gained notoriety from her appearances on the Juno soundtrack and her soft spoken delivery of some pretty heavy content. Though they’ve collaborated on individual tracks in the past, this is their first attempt at putting out material as a unit.
Though definitely musicians one wouldn’t have matched up right off the bat, The Uncluded somehow works, especially given both of the artists’ willingness to disclose the personal in their lyrics. The sound is unsettling at first, but after a couple of listens the whirl of complex, conflicting emotions and confusion suck you in.
