One of the oldest American festivals is coming to the California coast. The Newport Folk Festival is packing up and heading West for two days of folk, rock, blues and beyond.
Way Over Yonder, Newport Folk Festival’s Pacific incarnation, will take place in early October on southern California’s famed Santa Monica Pier. They’ve bagged 18 fantastic artists for their inaugural year, including Conor Oberst, Neko Case and The Felice Brothers, who will play on two stages with a beautiful ocean backdrop. Additionally, The Carousel will feature a handful of musicians doing acoustic performances.
Founded in 1959 by folk musician Pete Seeger, among others, The Newport Folk Festival was named the best music festival by concert industry publication Pollstar. It nudged it’s way into history as the site of the 1965 fiasco involving Bob Dylan using an electric backing band for the first time. There is no need for East Coast folk fans to fret; the festival will take place in it’s original Newport, Rhode Island location in July.
Way Over Yonder will celebrate it’s first year October 5th and 6th at the Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica, California. Tickets go on sale June 14th at 10am. For more information visit the festival website.
