Queens of the Stone Age – …Like Clockwork

Queens of the Stone Age is a name that needs little introduction. Since forming in the mid-’90s in the deserts of southern California, the band has released a bounty of records that has established them as one of the most prominent modern rock bands of the last decade-and-a-half. Since 2007’s Era Vulgaris, fans have highly anticipated their next album, entitled …Like Clockwork. With their latest, Queens of the Stone Age have proven that their songwriting is not only alive and well, but still flourishing into memorable works that are likely to become fan favorites for many years to come.

…Like Clockwork is best described as a pleasant musical journey filled with rich and inspired mid-tempo rock. The songs evidently appear to have been carefully composed and well thought out. For instance, the track “If I Had A Tail” makes use of a catchy, memorable and addictive chorus that features interesting bass lines and guitar riffs. Other tracks offer more variation, such as “Kalopsia.” In this song, variety is utilized in the form of soft vocals, soothing piano, heavy guitar chords and psychedelic solos. Another highlight is “My God Is The Sun,” which is an up-tempo anthem of elaborate riffs that grabs the listener’s attention instantly. Perhaps the most alluring track, though, is the title track. The song is a placid ballad of meditative pianos, powerful guitar solos and attention-grabbing buildups.

Queens of the Stone Age do have some room for improvement, however. Their overuse of mid tempos might be a turn-off to fans of their upbeat songs, like their well known “3’s & 7’s” track. Also, the opening number, “Keep Your Eyes Peeled,” comes off as rather dull and recurrent compared to the rest of the album.

Overall, Queens of the Stone age have undoubtedly succeeded in creating something special for their fans with …Like Clockwork. Their creative blend of multiple genres and their seasoned songwriting are enough reasons to give this album an honest listen. Even if one is not a fan, this isn’t a bad place to start.
