Eve – Lip Lock

“That Girl” is Back, Bad as Ever

With Lip Lock, Eve shows no signs of ring rust, and after an eleven year hiatus she is back to claim her crown as rap’s leading lady. Since her emergence on the scene in the early ’00s, Eve has done what many women tried to do in this male-dominated arena: succeed. While she was on top, she won several accolades including Grammy awards, Billboard hits and even international stardom with her song “Who’s That Girl?,” and now that she is back she’s here to prove that she is still a contender.

Lip Lock starts out with the track simply titled “Eve.” This song serves as a nice introduction for a newer audience who might not be familiar with her Ruff Ryder past and also provides a nice refresher to those who might have forgotten what this MC has to offer. “Make It Out This Town,” featuring Gabe Saporta shows more of Eve’s pop tendencies. Gabe’s chorus softens the sharp-tongued verses to form a tune that has bite but is also radio friendly at the same time.

“Call the police cause I’m murdering beats,” Eve announces on “Grind or Die” and these words are the perfect tagline for this album. Each track contains some of the most foot stomping, head bobbing beats that have graced speakers in the last few years and Eve delivers exquisite rhymes throughout.

The world has changed a lot in the last decade-plus, but one thing that has stayed constant is Eve’s ability to release consistent hit records. Lip Lock proves that even after a long break Eve can pick up a mic and go toe to toe with any new artist and guarantee to throw a few knock out punches.
