Lordi – To Beast Or Not To Beast

Thrash N’ Roll

Lordi is a hard rock/heavy metal band that originates from Finland and has released a stream of albums since the release of its debut in 1997. The amount of shows and bands Lordi has toured with is impressive to say the least; in the past, they have taken the stage in Ozzfest and have even toured with Type O Negative. They are also notable for their on-stage charisma and eye catching costume wear, which is sure to spark curiosity to those unfamiliar with the band. Its latest offer, To Beast Or Not To Beast, has the potential to become one of the most memorable releases of 2013.

Those who are familiar with Lordi’s music and sound might agree that their songs are quite hard to describe, due in part to several different elements are present on their songs. For example, the first track, “We’re Not Bad For The Kids (We’re Worse)” contains elements of ’80s hard rock and thrash metal, but is presented in a tongue-in-cheek humor similar to that of early crossover bands. Other songs are quite different, like the track “Horrifiction,” which is a mid-tempo melodious piece containing lyrical themes of horror. Additionally, several parts of the album feature interesting synthesizer/keyboard melodies, which is reminiscent of the hard rock/hair metal bands of the ’80s. The lyrical themes are also incredibly humorous. Near the end of the album, a track entitled “Sincerely With Love” contains a chorus which continuously repeats “fuck you asshole,” which many listeners might find similar to the lyrical themes of the bands such as M.O.D. or S.O.D.

Overall, Beast is really quite enjoyable and there is very little to bicker about it. The songs are all presented with a strong and clear production, the songwriting sounds fresh and groundbreaking, the different elements are likely to attract fans of multiple kinds of subgenres, and they also keep their songs interesting and varied. This release comes highly recommended to fans of hard rock, heavy metal and cheekiness.
