RZA is suing musical rights acquisition company Teichiku Entertainment after being accused of copyright infringement.
It is believed that he illegally sampled a brief piano track by Tokyo artist Meiko Kaji which was featured on Kanye West’s “Dark Fantasy,” off the My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album. RZA believes that a large sum of royalties have been withheld by Def Jam which are rightfully his, and he is fighting back with a vengeance against the company who he feels has wronged him.
RZA’s lawyer has spoken out about the claims, insisting:
We see dozens of baseless copyright-infringement claims against our clients every year. Rather than engaging in costly and fruitless dialogue trying to convince claimants and their contingency lawyers that our clients do not succumb to extortion and settle ridiculous claims, we have decided to commence declaratory relief actions to squash some of these claims and, perhaps, recover our costs of defending same. The RZA complaint is the second one of these we have filed this month, with more to come.
