Let naysayers be damned. Tenacious D are an impressive piece of music and comedy. While their songs do tackle humorous topics (“Low Hangin’ Fruit” is about exactly what you think it would be) the skill, timing and delivery of their music is a flawless display of what makes great comedy and great music work live. With no accompaniment, just the two of them on acoustic guitars, Jack Black and Kyle Gass effortlessly joke, riff and howl each tune. Amidst the high points were a knock-out bluesy rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll,” their hilarious tribute to often forgotten about band assistants the “Roadie” and an encore with quite possibly the most hilarious singalongs in recent memory on “Fuck Her Gently.” In addition to impeccable comedic timing, Black’s command of his voice is nothing short of eye-opening and exciting. It’s a wonder he doesn’t try his hand at a serious solo album as well.
