Japandroids Live at VICELAND SXSW 2013

Japandroids packed VICELAND to an extent that’s hard to imagine for a Tuesday night before SXSW officially opens. The outdoor space set up to be a Jansport Bonfire Sessions night (without the bonfire), the crowd surrounded even the outer walls of the venue. People craned their necks through every opening to try to catch a glimpse of the set. The duo of Japandroids (Brian King and David Prowse) blasted out proto punk shout-alongs, while the crowd thrashed along with manic glee. Kind of like seeing a phenomenon you didn’t know even existed. Guitarist/vocalist Brian King at one point grew fed up with the aggression of the bouncers to finally ask them to leave, saying, “I’ll take my chances.” Thankfully, even though the crowd was volatile, nothing got out of control.
