Beautiful Production, Forgettable Album
Bleeding Rainbow’s latest endeavor sees a name change (from the nostalgic and lawsuit-prone Reading Rainbow) and an album title that’s about as apathetic as the majority of its tracks. Yeah Right sadly stands as better background music than something to be shoved to the forefront. Though finely produced, its occasional breaks of lo-fi charm are few and fleeting. “Waking Dream” is rich in tone yet monotonous in scope. “Shades of Eternal Night” builds and builds until it hits a breaking point, lumping in as many harmonies and guitars as possible with a garnish of faint cymbal crashes. Though there seems to be an evening theme, these songs are better reserved for the morning after, faintly playing to a hangover.
Opener “Go Ahead” echoes the band’s transition within its first lines: “Some things need to change / Nothing will stay the same.” Bleeding Rainbow have altered their musical course, heading in the rocky direction of a broader category filled with artists who’ve simply done it better first. Rather than continuing on with understated bedroom indie, the quartet has opened the door and gone outside only to find that it’s all been done before, which may explain the generally safe risks taken on Yeah Right.
Not every album out there is set to change your life, nor is a bit of musical similarity a bad thing. There’s just something about such a clean, sleek album such as this that warrants no added attention, and it’s a shame. Given much more experimentation, Bleeding Rainbow may see the fruits of their labors pay off musically. But there’s got to be more at stake than a new moniker.
