Wavves announced the release of their LP, Afraid of Heights, set for this March. It is their fourth album to date.
Although Wavves began as a literal garage band, Afraid of Heights took about a year and a half to write and record. However, they didn’t stray too far from their roots. Wavves guitarist Nathan Williams paid for studio time completely out-of-pocket.
“In doing so, I had no one to answer to. We recorded the songs how and when we wanted without anybody interfering, and that’s how it’s supposed to be,” said Williams.
Williams shifted the lyric’s focus from his own “melancholy” life to more broad ideas. But the emotion behind the tracks remains the same.
“The general theme of the record is depression and anxiety, being death-obsessed and paranoid of impending doom. I feel like the narration is almost schizophrenic if you listen front to back; every word is important, even the constant contradictions and lack of self-worth. That’s all a part of this record-questioning everything not because I’m curious, but because I’m paranoid,” explained Williams.
Wavves will also embark on a North American tour this March.
“Demon to Lean On”, a track of their new album can be heard below, along with the video for “Sail to the Sun.”
