Rooted in Soul
Nashville based rockers, The Delta Saints have just released their self-released debut album, Death Letter Jubilee. Comprised of Ben Ringel (vocals, dobro) Ben Azzi on drums, Dylan Fitch on guitar, and David Supica rounding out the band on bass, The Delta Saints bring an album full of harmonica-laced bluesy rock with down home country soul. With 13 tracks on a debut album, you’d expect a hit here and miss there, but The Delta Spirit know exactly what they’re doing. Each song is exquisitely handcrafted with infectious gaiety, filling your soul with musical rapture that leaves you pining for more.
Opening the album is “Liar,” a song that is a favorable shock to your system. Cloaked with a contemporary beat, “Liar” woos with zealous guitar riffs overlapping ardent harmonica zest. Title track,”Death Letter Jubilee” is a hand clapping ditty with punchy guitar strums and Ringel’s slightly raspy yet fiery vocals. “Jezebel,” another clear standout song, slows it down a little bit. Long drawn strings and vocals conspire to manifest into a backwoods porch-swinging jam session. Pure, unadulterated genius.
Somehow 13 songs just isn’t enough. The good news is, if you’re looking for more (and I guarantee you will) these guys have churned out two earlier EPs, Pray On in 2009 and A Bird Called Angola in 2010. Death Letter Jubilee is an intense celebration of soulful music that stays with you long after listening.
