Kathleen Hanna Shares Updates On Revived Solo Project the Julie Ruin

Kathleen Hanna is almost complete with a new The Julie Ruin album with some help from James Murphy.

Kathleen Hanna, formerly of Bikini Kill, is bringing back her solo project The Julie Ruin. Pitchfork reports she has nearly twenty songs done and they are in the mixing phase of the recording process. Hanna revealed James Murphy worked on the song “Just My Kind” which also includes her bandmate Kathi Wilcox playing upright bass. Hanna had this to say about the song:

“The song [Murphy] gravitated to is called “Just My Kind” and is what I like to call a “desperate, pleading” love song. We were all surprised when he chose it because the rest of the record is so different. “Just My Kind” is definitely the only song Kathi played stand up bass on! She’d never played stand up before and just walked over and grabbed it and figured it out. Thank god she had saddle shoes on that day because it added that “magic moment” feeling you get in the studio sometimes.”

In an interview with A.V. Club the feminist icon went on to explain the recording process of the new Julie Ruin album:

“We’re not really in a hurry. Every band I’ve been in has totally taken over my life. And I really want this to be something that stays enjoyable and doesn’t become very professional. We’re all having fun, and we enjoy each other a lot. When we get together, we can’t stop chitter-chattering. I would like that to continue for as long as possible.”
