Hurricane Sandy made an impressionable stay on the East Coast this week, inconveniencing thousands of people, as well as canceling a number of artists’ performances. This includes Cat Power, whose Oct. 25th Philadelphia performance was put on hold until January of the next year. However, Mother Nature may not be the only driving force on this rescheduling.
Chan Marshall, 40, otherwise known as Cat Power, has notoriously suffered from substance abuse problems in the past and shaky performances. Thankfully, each time she has pulled through and made a comeback.
On Tuesday, Oct. 30, Pitchfork let us know of a photo and note Marshall posted on her Instagram:
“I may have to cancel my European Tour due to bankruptcy & my health struggle with Angioedema. I have not thrown in any towel; I am trying to figure out what best I can do. Heart broken. Worked so hard. Got sick day after “Sun” came out & been struggling to keep all points of me in equilibrium: mind, spirit, body healthy centered & grounded. I am doing the best I can. I fucking love this planet. I refuse to give up. Though I may need to restratagize for my security & health.”
Angioedemais a sudden and severe swelling that can be life-threatening if the swelling blocks air from getting to the lungs.
In the same Instagram post, Marshall also admitted that the angioedema is in her throat and suggested she was all better after “Mexican treatment,” as noted by Spin. Last month Marshall was hospitalized for “undisclosed health reasons,” as confirmed by her label, Matador Records.
We sincerely hope that Cat Power can get back on all fours and keep singing! Bankruptcy and illness at the same time is quite a bit to handle. Only time will tell what is to come.

UPDATE
Cat Power fans have nothing to be sad about anymore! As of November 1 (with many thanks to Spin), Chan Marshall will be back on that stage.
Seeing as her Twitter page was the original source of information regarding the cancellation, it only seems fitting that another ‘tweet’ was made to cancel the cancellation! She wrote:
EUROPEAN TOUR IS ON. WITHOUT STAGE PRESENTATION. HARD MONEY WASTED. #GOODBYE #GORILLA instagr.am/p/Rf1aT0m3Vl/
For those who may have seen Cat Power on her recent tour, or pictures of it, you may have noticed the large gorilla backdrop. While the show must go on, the primitive friend will not be helping to decorate the stage.
Marshall’s Instagram was also the source she used to announce her feelings on her angioedema.
The caption reads:
MY ANGIOEDEMA IS FROM LOW IMMUNE & IS CAUSED BY STRESS. All I wanna do is sing my damn songs & give my best to the fans that love me. NOT HAVING FUNDS TO HAVE MY STUPID LIGHT SHOW FOR FANS HAS PUT ME IN A CORNER. BUT I WAS BORN IN A CORNER….. REFUSE TO LOSE.
Cat Power is back on the road! The aforementioned canceled tour dates remain the current tour dates. Click here to buy tickets for this tour.
