Kaki King is a musician unlike any other out there. Unconventional and captivating, King’s sixth studio album release has solidified her as a true virtuoso of the guitar. Glow pairs the guitar guru up with producer James Goodwin and backing string quartet ETHEL to create a mystical twelve track album that hauntingly stays with you long after the album is over. Tucked away in a Woodstock studio, King brings to life guitar strings unlike any other out there. With sheer precision, and as a true virtuoso of the guitar, her newest album Glow embarks on a new road King set out for herself.
The album kicks off with “Great Round Burn” a seemingly Celtic inspired track that is luxuriously layered in strings, enticing you to listen to what King has in store for the course of the eleven tracks to follow. Slow and slightly melancholy is the track “Skimming A Fractured Surface”, a song that follows close to its name with faint new-age strings, intertwined with heavy folk inspired guitar plucks, creating a spellbinding tune. One standout track is “King Pizel”, a beautiful and whimsical song laced with subtle images of a turn-of-the-century Irish hoedown.
Kaki King’s voice may be heavily missed on this album, but her talent on the guitar can outweigh any vocal loss. Her skills are exceptional: King is a woman musically ahead of her time, and Glow is exactly that.
