Dan Deacon is not the type of artist that lets you casually stroll into a venue, complain about the barline, and tacidly watch from the sidelines. Oh no, audience participation is key in the electronic musician’s live shows. When strolling by his set, at Fun Fun Fun Fest last year, it was perplexing to see that the only people on the stage were some photographers with their cameras pointed downward. The artist could be heard kicking out pinging electronic heavy beats, but not seen. That’s because he was performing from the epicenter of the crowd, hidden away by rings of dancing bodies. Artist, and audience on the same level makes for a really neat interaction that is far from the norm. Mr. Deacon really knows how to work his crowds.
