A Form of Foreshadowing
Electronic music producing duos have been taking dance floors by storm this past decade. Ever since the days of Daft Punk, musicians have been pairing up to double their output and double their fun. Groups like Massive Attack, The Chemical Brothers, and more recently Knife Party have seen a dramatic spike in popularity in recent years with no foreseeable end to this twosome trend. Although the rock band paradigm will never go out of style, the future looks bright for duos like Simian Mobile Disco.
SMD’s fourth EP, A Form of Change, comes at a well timed 5 months after their last studio album, Unpatterns. The four track EP is loaded with a wide array of subtle nuances from the two, each song exceeding five minutes in length. The record is, perhaps, a foreshadowing into the new, sexier direction they have chosen for their sound.
A growing electronic white noise welcomes listeners to A Form of Change on the title track, which grows into a whomping crescendo as if it were a 7 minute intro track. All ethereal electronic sounds with elusive origins are used throughout the song, in the traditional SMD style. The whimsical synthesizers continue on “Unfixed”, which contains pulsing drum loops reminiscent of deep house and is sure to get rumps shaking internationally. Closer, “Everyday”, has a sexy, ’70s era disco veneer with a modern house cornerstone, creating a well produced track even John Digweed would envy.
Simian Mobile Disco has always treaded the tight rope in between EDM genres, and A Form of Change is no different. For true SMD fans this is an absolute buy, although any EDM fan should definitely have a listen.
