You Are Forgiven
It’s been a busy summer for Scott Kelly, first up was the release of Songs of Townes Van Zandt with Steve Von Till and Wino and this month he’s releasing The Forgiven Ghost In Me, his third full-length solo album. This round Kelly partners up with The Road Home (Noah Landis and Greg Dale) to continue a personal and somewhat emotional musical journey.
A far cry from anything Neurosis fans might be familiar with, The Forgiven Ghost In Me, shows Kelly’s more vulnerable side. The album is sparse, and peeled back are the many layers of guitars, drums and heavy metal cords that we’ve known to showcase Kelly’s gruff and seductive voice.
Opening The Forgiven Ghost In Me is “A Spirit Redeemed To The Sun” in which Kelly hits each cord with such precision that he creates effortless sounding music and yet still has the ability to take you to another level of doomed darkness. A lighthearted album this is not. “We Let The Hell Come” is a true album highlight with Kelly’s deep, raw voice and the overwhelming despair of the an acoustic guitar. The eight songs overflow from one into the next with no real distinct difference and somehow still gratifying to listen through.
Kelly has a way of leaving you in surprise of what he’s capable of doing. The Forgiven Ghost In Me exhibits that perfectly.
