If you were expecting anything vaguely Spice Girls-esque, be warned: 2NE1 is not your average, innocent girl band. These badass chicks are less of a fad and more of a phenomenon, taking Korea, then Asia and now the world by the storm. K-pop is a genre that is long overdue to cross into the US – think your average club hit on sassiness steroids, with serious hip-hop beats, rapping, electronic hooks and a heavy dose of fierceness injected like venom into every track. Add some killer dance moves, avant-garde fashion that’s inspired the likes of renowned designers like Jeremy Scott and you’ve got 2NE1.
CL, Minzy, Dara and Born aren’t just members of this girl group – they’re the new generation of devil-may-care pop princesses who are less boy-obsessed and more beat-obsessed. Even producer superstar Will.i.am has taken notice: he’s signed them onto his label as his new proteges and this first global tour will be their step in making the world their stomping ground.
Give them a listen, or better yet, a watch (music vids below) – I guarantee even the most stout pop music-haters won’t be able to stop the track halfway. Say hello to your new addiction.
