Kitten lead singer Chloe Chaidez‘s voice has quite the purr, but that’s just about where the similarities to their name end. If you were expecting something vaguely cuddly and cute, be surprised: Kitten‘s members may be young (Chloe just the ripe age of 17 and the others all under 21), but their take on indie-rock is surprisingly mature.
As a female-fronted indie band with a penchant for electronic embellishments, the comparisons are bound to come: some say a more synthy Yeah Yeah Yeahs, others proclaim darker Metric – but comparisons aside, Kitten stands easily all on its own. They somehow manage to ooze all the best qualities of a young band in bloom while maintaining an air of a certain sophisticated world weariness – a precarious balance some seasoned pros still struggle to find. Their 2010 EP Sunday School was an unusually raw debut, and their newest EP Cut It Out (available August 28 via Atlantic Records) is a fitting follow-up: full of the same frenzied pop hooks and 80’s new wave eccentricity, but this time glossier and more refined. It’s the type of music that you can easily dance around in your room to until you tire out and end up sliding down next to your speakers, nodding your head to the wash of hazy guitars and Chloe’s mesmerizing purr.
To give their songs a listen, check out the vids below. Or better yet, go see them for yourself at one of their much-enthused live shows. They’re playing tearing up Bootleg Bar on June 25th in LA, supporting ridiculously catchy indie-poppers The Colourist and brother sister duo Blondfire, along with Amsterdam-based Monokino. If you know what’s good for you, you’ll be there. Did I mention that the show is free? Well, it is.
