Destroyer. How do you even begin to introduce this band? I guess you could start in Canada, 1996, as frontman Dan Bejar self-produced his lo-fi, folk-tinged solo project We’ll Build Them a Golden Bridge (yes, the one that earned him more than a few Bowie comparisons). But then you’d have to cover everything from then until now, which – 9 albums and EPs later – is quite a lot.
You could focus on the highlights, like the pop culture-condemning 2001 release Streethawk: A Seduction or the unexpected, mind-bending follow-up, Your Blues. Or you could focus on his extended stint with Canadian supergroup The New Pornographers, but even that wouldn’t do Destroyer full justice in its own sense.
All that being said, I think it’d be best to just let the music do the talking. If you’re down for sensitive glam-rock, sunny indie-pop with bite and whatever other somewhat juxtaposing genre Destroyer may fall into, you should hit up the El Rey next week for their show. Given their longevity and Bejar’s undeniable musical prowess, it’s guaranteed to be just a-boot the best thing you’ve experienced from Canada since maple syrup.
