According to SPIN‘s first listen, it looks like Linkin Park’s fifth LP should be something new from the band, a record unlike anything they’ve done before.  The band’s first two LP’s, Hybrid Theory and Meteora, saw incredible success but soon after, the band realized they would have to reinvent their sound if they were to keep the ball rolling.  Critics and fans alike were shocked when 2010 rolled around and they put out A Thousand Suns, an album that was almost completely absent of characteristically Linkin Park moments.  It appears that the new album should contain both parts of the equation; the nü-metal sound that everyone has come to expect from Linkin Park, and their newfound sense of exploration.

Here’s what rapper Mike Shinoda had to say:

People would be surprised to learn how much of a sense of humor we have about ourselves.  There are things we’ve done in our career that we wouldn’t do now, but they felt right at the time.  It’s like opening a drawer and finding an old pair of bell bottoms, going, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe I went to school wearing that.

Another newsworthy addition to the story is the announcement that Arcade Fire’s strings arrange, Owen Pallett, made contributions to the album.  Here’s what Bennington said it was like working with Pallett:

He’s incredible.  You send him notes and he’s immediately like, ‘I just sent you the track. Like, five minutes ago. It’s done.’
