Zola Jesus Live at Elysium SXSW

Zola Jesus earned her reputation as one of music’s exciting newcomers tonight. The online world has been buzzing about her for just over a year, and the acclaim was enough to land her collaborations on Orbital’s new album Wonky, last year’s critically acclaimed album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming by M83 and the most epic Serge Gainsbourg tribute to date at the Hollywood Bowl. She’s tiny in stature, but bombastic in stage presence. Her music may borrow heavily from the new-school electro and 80’s goth, but she rocks out like she’s living a punk anthem. At one point she even dropped into the crowd and moshed like a pinball amidst her fans through the latter half of the song. The electronics never choked off the melody and her violinist added just the right degree of organic color.
