A Walk Up the Rise
Dirty Three’s new album is the outcome of eclectic musical experiences that Warren Ellis, Jim White, and Mick Turner have gained from around the world together with international artists. Toward The Low Sun combines folk melodies, Celtic rhythms, blues, and rock.
No need for vocals: Warren Ellis’ violin sings the melodies just like a human being. Mick Turner and Jim White bring their instruments to life into nine engaging trucks. The band immediately releases psychedelic tension as the album begins, with distorted violin and over driven guitar riffs. Quite unexpectedly, they take a more melodic direction for the rest of the album.
“Ashen Snow” harmoniously blends piano and violin to create a moving tune; the piano helps create a melancholic atmosphere that dynamically grows and declines. “Sometimes I Forget You’ve Gone “ starts off with a beautiful merging of piano and drums. Guitar joins in while drums get more irregular; it all seems to indicate a sorrow lament of an abandoned man. A rock spirit still drives tracks like “That Was Was,” where violin and guitar collide against each in a noisy burst.
