Popular hip hop producer, Dan The Automator, has a new brainchild. He has teamed up with Emily Wells in a catchy, new collaborative project called Pillowfight. This new band is headed to Austin for SXSW in March and their new album will be released sometime in 2012.
Dan The Automator might be best known for his contributions towards the Gorillaz’ first album, though he has been consistently putting out fresh music for over 20 years. Emily Wells is lesser known of the two, but she also has a long-standing musical career as a songwriter and violinist. Though all musical contributions came from Dan The Automator and Emily Wells, the group is being advertised as a trio because of David Choe’s involvement in the project. All artwork is done by Choe, who is a respected American painter and muralist.
As reported by Emily Wells’ website, Pillowfight came about after a mutual friend heard Dan The Automator voice that he was looking for a female vocalist. Wells went to San Francisco to meet up with Dan The Automator in the studio and worked on tracks that were a part of Dan’s new “passion project”. After Wells wrote and recorded vocals for three days in San Francisco, the two decided to expand the project into a full length album.
Though the date has yet to be determined, people who find themselves in Austin this March will have a chance to see Pillowfight. This message appeared on Dan The Automator’s Twitter on February 18.
