Cerebral Falsies
There’s basically two reactions you can get from playing people Cereral Ballzy. Play it for your young-faced, Hot Topic “punks” or even your favorite HipStar who only likes punk “ironically,” and you’ll be burning CDs for their friends ad nauseum. Trying to play Cerbral Ballzy for those old enough to have actually been hardcore, and you’ll be treated to a surly chorus of “What the f*ck?!”
Cerebral Ballzy on paper had nothing but promise. Their Adult Swim spot, after we had all realized what we had just seen, portrayed them as a more hardcore OFWGKTA, full of youthful spirit and a ‘fuck you’ attitude. They just did a full US tour and played a handful of festivals abroad, so clearly they’re worth their salt, right?
However, on paper the words good and food rhyme. Cerebral Ballzy’s one good attribute is that it’s extremely short, clocking in at just under twenty minutes. That being said, it seems like that’s what they’ve given us: twenty minutes of the same riff, the same vocal tricks, and the same drum breakdowns that we’ve heard a million times over. The only thing to distinguish Cerebral Ballzy from your little brother’s high school band is that Cerebral Ballzy is inexplicably signed and making loot.
There may yet be some hope for Cerebral Ballzy. They have that exuberant energy that you only truly possess in your youth, and guitarists Jason and Mason have a few scattered moments that sound like their trying to play something awesome. For right now though, the run the danger of just being another flavor of the week. Will they get their act together for another record? Only time will tell.
