Radiohead guitarist Johnny Greenwood recently reunited with director Thomas Anderson and lesser-known English jazz group Zed-U to contribute to the score for Anderson’s long awaited film, The Master. As reported by Consequence of Sound, tweet from British record label Babel’s founder Oliver Weindling shed light on the collaboration and gave a tentative release date of 2013.
Greenwood and Anderson collaborated recently for Anderson’s film There Will Be Blood, and Greenwood has contributed to scores for such films as an adaptation of 1987’s Norwegian Wood as well as Lynne Ramsay’s dramatic We Need to Talk About Kevin.
How Greenwood chooses to tackle the religious-cult subject matter of The Master will no doubt be a refreshing experience for fans of his uniquely eccentric compositions. The story focuses on a World War II veteran, played by Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Mission Impossible 2, The Big Lebowski), who returns home from war so disgruntled by the horrors he has seen that he creates his own religion. U.S. fans awaiting for this almost-dead project to come to light may not have to wait until 2013- films are typically released later in the U.K., therefore a 2012 U.S. release date is probable.

One listen and it is clear that Zed-U’s inquisitive and otherworldly production is going to mesh handsomely with Greenwood’s own penchant for atmospheric avant-garde compositions. Stay tuned for details and release updates for The Master.
