Southern heavy metal outfit Mastodon will team up with Canadian indie-pop darling Feist for limited edition Record Store Day 7” EP that will feature each artist covering a track from the other.
News of the collaboration first surfaced after a Feist interview from Hit Fix saw publication, where she admits to pitching the idea to Matador Records after meeting the band at a taping of Later with Jools Holland.
MXDWN recently caught up with Mastodon’s Troy Sanders to discuss the split, and word is that’s its coming together despite the challenges posed by Mastodon’s ongoing tour.
“Our current US tour is ending tomorrow, and we fly to Europe in January to start our tour over there, so we have to have it done and recorded within that one-month span. And when you throw in all the holidays, and New Year’s, we need to get on that right away,” Sanders said.
All the hubbub caused by the band’s tour has, however, prevented Mastodon from selecting which Feist track they will be covering, although Sanders did confirm that the track will come from Feist’s most recent album, Metals.
“We’re currently in the works, trying to narrow that down, as we only have a small window to make it happen, for us anyway,”Mastodon’s Troy Sanders Reveals Details about Upcoming Record Store Day Split with Feist he said. “We’re going to do something off their latest one.”
Feist, from Sanders’ understanding, is “leaning towards doing ‘Oblivion.’” a track that comes from Mastodon’s 2009 release, Crack the Skye.
“But that was two months ago, so I don’t know if they’ve narrowed down what they want to do yet. But anything that they choose, I know it’s going to be beautiful, and whatever we choose, I’m confident that it will be rockin,” he added.
