The Slow Burn
With a name and style likely to inspire WTF reactions, moog-aholic Com Truise drops his debut album, Galactic Melt. Thought mid-fi synth-wave is something Seth Haley has been doing for years, this only comes after his rising in popularity with a remix featured on the Tron: Legacy soundtrack. Now the New York based producer begins to make his way into the competitive world of electronic music production.
Intro track “Terminal” sets the stage for a futuristic soundscape coming to you straight from an international space station. Layering arpeggiated synths, vocoders and glitches across a plateau of ambient melodies makes up the chill electronics in “VHS Sex.” Rampant drum machines, appropriately placed stabs, and beautiful chimes make up a bulk of Galactic Melt. “Air Cal” mixes a lot of different styles; part intelligent dance music, a little 303 acid, an almost dubstep sounding drum loop, and ambient trance. The warm, slow, and almost psychedelic theme omnipresent on the album is arguably esoteric, but undeniably mellow.
Heavily influenced by retro electronic sounds of the 80’s (Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, Duran Duran), Com Truise mixes simple analogue noises with sounds more popular in contemporary electronica to create something truly special. Whether you long for the sounds of 80s New Age bands or just enjoy ambient electronic, Galactic Melt is certainly interesting and worthy of a listen. Even more interesting is where Seth Haley is headed next and what alias he will use.
