Rock icons Duran Duran have just released a video for “Girl Panic!” that is really more like a short film than a music video. The track is off their newest album, All You Need Is Now, which came out in March of 2011.
In the three decades since they originally formed in England, Duran Duran has sold eighty million albums worldwide. Back in their heyday, Duran Duran were dubbed the ‘prettiest boys in rock.’ Based on what they attempted with this new video, somebody who doesn’t know anything about the band might consider them the ‘prettiest girls in rock’. They are a band famed for the work they did with fashion designers to create a glamourous image for themselves. Their new video for “Girl Panic!” accents their glamourous aesthetic, while also highlighting their good sense of humour.
In the video directed by Grammy Award-winner Jonas Åkerlund, five of the world’s top supermodels act as the band members of Duran Duran in a series of mockumentary-styled of interviews. Naomi Campbell steps into the shoes of lead singer Simon Le Bon, Cindy Crawford pretends to be bassist John Taylor, Eva Herzigova embodies keyboardist Nick Rhodes, Helena Christensen takes on the position of drummer Roger Taylor, and Yasmin Le Bon plays the role of the ‘anonymous guitarist’. As you watch these top supermodels pretending to be members of the band in this day-in-the-life style of interviews, you might notice that the actual band members essentially serve as extras in their own video, pretending to be bellhops, waiters, chauffeurs and members of the press.
