Confirmed initially by Grandmaster Flash via a tweet that read simply “I was just told Heavy D passed away,” news of the seminal rapper’s death was cemented by SPIN hip-hop journalist Dream Hampton.
TMZ filled in more details with their followup report, stating that Heavy D was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital today around 12:00 PM. He was pronounced dead just an hour after his arrival.
Born Dwight Arrington Myers, Heavy D was known best for his hit single “Now That We Found Love,” a track that is the culmination of stellar work throughout the 80s and 90s in the form of catchy hip-hop stylings mixed with pop sensibilities.
D saw five of his records hit the Top 40, primarily due to his exceedingly smooth, yet highly accurate and quick, trademark flow. His work garnered him guest appearances on a variety of artists’ projects, including those of both Janet and Michael Jackson.
The cause of Heavy D’s death is currently unknown. In recent days, the rapper seemed healthy and ready to continue his career, most recently serving as the closing act for this year’s BET awards where he performed an inspired medly of his past hits. Just yesterday, he posted a message to his Twitter reading “Be inspired.”
MXDWN extends our sincerest condolences to Heavy D’s family, friends and fans.
