Tracey Thorn Covers The xx on New EP

Tracey Thorn has recently released her beautiful rendition of The xx’s song, “Night Time.” Contradicting usual cover song stories, The xx actually requested the recreation of the song. The band has been approaching all of their favorite artists to do renditions of their previously released songs.

The song’s conception carries with it an interesting back story that potentially could have left the single unreleased and unable for fans to listen to this sticky sweet ear candy. Mere months after the project was commissioned by The xx, it fell through due to unfortunate logistical problems that remain unnamed. Luckily, this was all before Thorn squeezed in some session time to record the incredibly beautiful “Night Time.”

The xx gave Thorn the opportunity to pick her favorite track to cover and she rightfully chose “Night Time.” It features a fairly well known collaborator for fans of her previous artistic endeavor, the band Everything But the Girl’s Ben Watt. His print on the track is through guitars and backing vocals. This collaboration is fairly monumental because it’s the first time the two have played together on a recording in over ten years. The song also features drums and programming courtesy of Tracey’s current production collaborator Ewan Pearson who also expertly produced both of Thorn’s recent acclaimed albums Love and Its Opposite and 2007’s Out of the Woods.

Fortunately for us, “Night Time” is not the only auditory treat we will receive from Thorn on her newest EP. “Swimming”  one of her most recent albums, Love and Its Opposite’s most commercially and critically popular tracks, is also revisited and wonderfully remixed on this release. Pearson has re-edited last year’s remix by then-emerging-and-now-current popular dance producers Visionquest (Detroit’s Seth Troxler, Ryan Crosson, and Lee Curtiss) into a new version, with new drum parts and a crisp widescreen mix-down.
