Last week, famed hip-hop group The Roots announced that their 13th studio album, undun, is to be released December 6. Now, they have unveiled the details of their first concept album ever and released “Make My”, their first single.
undun, released via Def Jam, is being referred to as an “existential retelling” of the rise and demise of the album’s protagonist, Redford Stephens. The Roots hope to produce a cohesive album that dwells on themes of free will and destiny through the dramatic chronicle of Stephens’ life that starts with his death in the first track and then works backwards. As Stephens attempts to make sense of his fate, “he begins to deconstruct all that has led to his (and our own) coming undun.”
The band’s drummer, ?uestlove, stated that The Roots are embracing shorter records in hopes for creating a cohesive product rather than generating what could potentially sound like a playlist. He says the album will be cinematic in feeling and thematically connected so that the listener can learn from the narrative arc.
