Joy Division bassist Peter Hook has announced tour dates for the U.S., Canada, and Mexico with his group, Peter Hook & The Light. The U.S. performances will feature sequential and complete performance of Joy Division’s seminal final album, Closer. Moby has announced plans to join Peter Hook & The Lights for the Los Angeles portion of their tour. The group will also perform Joy Division’s 1979 debut album, Unknown Pleasures, for audiences in Canada and Mexico during the second leg of the tour, which extends through October 1.
Peter Hook joined up with The Light after playing the opening night of the Manchester venue, The Factory, in early February of last year. Since then, the group has toured extensively, including stops throughout Europe, Australia, and the U.K.
The group released their debut EP 1102/2011 digitally on Hacienda Records. The EP is available exclusively at www.fac51thehacienda.com. It features unreleased renditions of the Joy Division songs, “Atmosphere,” “New Dawn Fades,” and “Insight.” It also features a previously unreleased Joy Division track, “Pictures in Mind.”
In December, the group performed Joy Division’s debut album, Unknown Pleasures for U.S. audiences. This year’s tour will take Unknown Pleasures to Canada and Mexico.
Both Closer and Unknown Pleasures were produced by the late Martin Hannett, and the two albums are widely considered to be the best examples of his production style. This fall’s tour will serve as a live recap of the influence that these two albums have had–even 30 years later.
On Thursday September 15, Peter Hook will make an in-store appearance and signing at Los Angeles’ Amoeba Records to promote the release of the live album, Unknown Pleasures Live in Australia. For more information, visit the event page here.
It isn’t only Peter Hook’s tour announcement that his put him back into recent music news. New Order, the group formed with the remaining members of Joy Division after vocalist Ian Curtis’ suicide in 1980, has announced plans to reunite–without Peter Hook. In a post made today on his website, Hook says that he does not agree with the decision to reunite without him, and that “it is very sad.”
