Mali Performers Tinariwen Announce North American Tour Dates

Tinariwen, refugee camp-formed group out of the Sahara region of Mali, has announced plans for a fall North American tour in support of the newest album, Tassili. The album was recorded in a protected region of the South-Eastern Algerian desert, and features additions from Wilco guitarist Nels Cline, and the horns from the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

The group has decided to kick off their tour with an appearance at Los Angeles’ OohLaLa Festival on Friday September 30, and will cover major east and west coast venues, concluding in Seattle on December 1.

The group’s unusual history, world location, and critical acclaim make this North American tour an interesting prospect. After a Los Angeles show, Consequence of Sound said, “Tinariwen proved why they’ve earned a reputation as one of the world’s most entertaining acts; their performance was a true testament to the universal power of music.”

Though the group has previously portrayed themselves as musician-soldiers, the group has laid aside their weapons—and even their electric guitars—in favor of an acoustic sound. The sound journey is meant to be contemplative, introspective, and universal, something that critics have taken note of.

Tickets for the fall tour are now available on the band’s official website.
