Well, it’s official. That long-awaited and somewhat expected Death Cab For Cutie/Flaming Lips collaboration is a go, a piece of news that comes just days after the Lips released their highly-hyped joint effort with Lightning Bolt.

A recent Spinner interview with bandmates Ben Gibbard and Nick Harmer at Montreal’s Osheaga festival ended with a surprise visit from The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne, who snagged the duo for a future collaborative EP.
“We should find a way to do a Flaming Lips/Death Cab three or four song EP,” Coyne said as the Spinner tapes rolled. Gibbard was reportedly enthusiastic about the opportunity, responding “let’s do it!”
In typical Coyne fashion, the proposition was loose and relaxed, with Coyne telling the DCFC bandmates “don’t make it a big deal.”
The trio batted around a few ideas, suggesting the use of unreleased tracks known such as “Aimless Intellectual” and “American Waltz.”
During the interview, Coyne also confirmed that the Lips will be working with Nick Cave and Black Moth Super Rainbow for future collaborations.
Further details, such as a release date or title, for the Death Cab/Flaming Lips effort are currently unconfirmed. In any case, this does not mark frontman Ben Gibbard’s first joint project with the Lips (well, sort of), as his side project Postal Service covered and remixed several of Coyne’s tracks for their 2003 EP, Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell.
