It Ain’t Broke, So Don’t Fix It
When The Pierces hit the scene in 2000, people couldn’t stop comparing them to the likes of Stevie Nicks and Nancy Sinatra. The duo of Catherine and Allison Pierce blended enchanting folk riffs with sultry, smokey voices, making a sound that was new and innovative at that time. Now, eleven years later and The Pierces unleash their Love You More EP. It’s more of the same, and that’s a good thing.
The title track “Love You More” starts out like a lone gunman, traveling in stoic fashion, about to unleash an absolute fury on its targets. The twangy guitar riffs and reverb in “Love You More” paints a very chilling portrait of how painful loving someone can be. The next song, “We Are Stars,” is a good coupling with the title track. It has that same dreary motif, but the duo’s harmonizing voices disarm you from the previous adrenaline rush. Yet the final tracks “To the Grave” and “We Can Make It” are deeply rooted in their folk roots. Both songs are good but it lends nothing memorable, which makes it susceptible to being overshadowed by the opening tracks.
Looking back at what The Pierces have done in the past eleven their predecessors like Stevie Nicks, The Mamas & The Papas, and Nancy Sinatra. But, you would WANT to be compared to the likes of these musicians, wouldn’t you?
