Canadian new wave outfit Metric recently announced the release of Fantasies Flashbacks, which consists entirely of fan-created remixes of songs from the group’s 2009 hit, Fantasies—and they’ll be promoting its release via social media in a way that will benefit several music retail stores across the country.
The Fantasies Flashbacks project began last year when Metric hooked up with Indaba Music, an online community of musicians, to host a remix contest that resulted in several thousand submissions.
The massive influx of remixes prompted Metric to select their favorites and compile them into the upcoming Fanstasies Flashbacks deluxe release, which will come in the form of a limited-edition vinyl box set. All proceeds will be donated to the Center for Addiction and Mental Health.
The box set, slated for an October 11 release, will contain the following:
To promote the album’s release, Metric will utilize Facebook to allow fans to “check in” at three participating record stores using the Hear Now mobile app, which will allow those participating to download a free unreleased track from Fantasies Flashbacks. The associated record stores are Austin, TX’s Waterloo Records and both of Seattle, WA’s Sonic Boom shops.
The aforementioned stores will each be given 100 free, limited edition Metric PlayButtons that come preloaded with the Indaba remixes. They will be distributed for free on a first come, first serve basis to those who “check in.”
The group hopes that the Hear Now angle will encourage fans to make their way to record shops for a physical copy. If not, though, you can still preorder the release via the band’s website and still receive three bonus tracks.
