I first heard Chasing Kings after randomly getting my hands on their EP 2 years ago during a stint I did at the LA Times, and since then I’ve gotten to see these guys play many an amazing show as well as get to know them personally.
A lot of bands spend their whole careers trying to come up with that special something, that oomph that sets them apart from the hundreds of others. Chasing Kings is a band that not only possesses that special something, but exudes it effortlessly and flawlessly in performance after every frickin amazing performance. And no, I’m not just saying that because they’re my friends. (Just ask my roommates- their 6 song EP was on repeat for weeks. I’m surprised my roomies didn’t politely punch me in the face.)
Seriously though. These guys rock, in every sense of the word. Matt’s vocals somehow manage to possess the weight of the world without ever crossing the line to being melodramatic, while Drew, Mike and Nick continually tear up the stage in a perfectly chaotic whirlwind of riffs, lines and rhythms. Their sound is cigarette smoke and coffee- perfect for waking up as well as winding down.
So….what I’m basically trying to say in this oh-so-serious post is that everyone should go see them TONIGHT at THE ECHO. They’re playing with an awesome line-up of other bands (I can’t stop listening to Shadow Shadow Shade‘s song Say Yes), and if you RSVP here the tickets are only $5 instead of $7. Whoo!
Oh, and check out their new video for their song Empathy here if you want to witness Matt try to sing as he gets fruity pebbles flung in their face. It’s just as entertaining as it sounds.
*Also, if you want a double-fix, they’re playing an earlier show at The Central in Santa Monica w/Irontom, Francisco the Man and Rademacher. Details here.
