Since getting back together in 2004, The Pixies current run has lasted longer than their initial incarnation but has failed to produce another album. That is, until now—at least according to a recent interview with drummer David Lovering.
Touring for the past two years playing their beloved Doolittle album in its entirety (and just adding Lost Cities leg), The Pixies have long resisted fans plans for the group to record new material. That time spent on the road has apparently helped the group re-gel to the point where to material is possible.
“It’s definitely a stronger possibility than it was a few years ago. It’s going to be baby steps, though. We have the formula and we know we can do it. But if we put something out, it has to be good. Period. We don’t want to break the legacy. It’s much more of a free subject to talk about now though. We’re gonna go slowly and see what will happen,” said Lovering in a recent interview with Rolling Stone.
While not a definite yes to new material, Lovering’s statements in the Rolling Stone interview indicate a good possibility for new material in the future. The drummer also revealed his surprise that the band’s current run is still happening.
“I don’t know if there is an end in sight with the way things are going. We can still play shows and people still want to see us. When we got back together in 2004 I wasn’t looking at the long run. I think we’re very fortunate and really enjoying it, so it keeps going and going,” he said.
That surprise stems from the infamous infighting that was a constant presence during The Pixies’ initial tours from their first run. However, with a seven year run and a possibility for new material on the horizon, that feuding has apparently subsided.
