It’s rumored that there are two biopics that tell different stories involving Jeff Buckley (One starring Gossip Girl’s Penn Badgley). Although it’s likely that only one of the two will actually feature music from the fallen songwriters catalog.
Earlier this week Smuggler Films announced that Gossip Girl’s Penn Badgley will star in the long awaited film Greetings From Tim Buckley as the troubled singer songwriter’s son, Jeff Buckley. The film is the true story of the days leading up to Jeff’s landmark 1991 performance at his father’s tribute concert in St. Anne’s Church that is said to have launched his career. But sources also reveal that no songs from the Buckley catalog have been included in the rights package.
Now Deadline New York is reporting that there is second biopic in the making by music video director Jake Scott (Radiohead, U2, R.E.M., Smashing Pumpkins). The film is based on a script by Ryan Jaffe (The Rocker) although no word on who’s to play Jeff Buckley. Unlike the former biopic the producers of this as of yet unnamed film have optioned the the book “Dream Brother: The Lives of Jeff and Tim Buckley” as a resource. The film also lists Buckley’s mother Mary Guibert as executive producer. Judging from the details behind both films its likely the latter is the one most likely to actually happen.
