No More Words
London’s Anna Calvi seductively pushes her way to the top with her Fender Telecaster and swooning voice on her self-titled debut album. Breaking boundaries and named a nominee for BBC’s Sound of 2011 poll, Anna Calvi intrigues its listeners and audience in its entirety.
The album opens with “Rider To The Sea,” an instrumental song echoing Morrison’s “Riders On The Storm.” The opener prepares you for her refined, maroon, and almost sad vocals in “No More Words”: “Feel your warmth, I feel you by my side, All my Love.” She gives her voice a rest and returns to the tantalizing guitar licks.
While most of the album is seductive, sexy and sensational, “Suzanne and I” begins sounding like an 80s radio hit comparable to The Cure. She returns to the passionate theme quickly, however, and her voice continues to carry and mesmerize ranging in an assortment of highs and lows in merely seconds: “Suzanne and I, We will rise, We hold, hold it down, ‘Cause I never, ever, ever, ever be alone.” Later we hear her belt out with even more passion in “The Devil”: “The devil, the devil will come!” followed by an astounding guitar performance.
With this as her debut album, we can expect almost anything from Anna Calvi in the future. What makes Calvi even more appealing is her dramatic live performances. Anna is not just an upcoming starlet, she is a true performer. Catch one of her performances as soon as you can.
