By all accounts, Dark Was The Night – the 2010 indie rock compilation album curated by members of The National – was a monster success, raising over $1 million for charity. Now, The National are at it again, compiling a compilation of covers of an group not typically associated with indie rock – the Grateful Dead.
The group has named some potential contributors already, including Steve Reich, Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver, according to bassist Scott Davendorf. The National appear to be leaning toward covering “Box of Rain” or “Unbroken Chain.”
Davendorf, who is “shadow curating” the album, says the compilation could be out in the next year or two. Management for The National released the following statement after the story broke: “Bryce and Aaron Dessner are currently working on a follow up to Dark Was The Night. No details can be confirmed at this time.“
