A few years back we at mxdwn enjoyed covering the non-ironic, fun-filled pop band The Format. The Format quietly broke up under amicable conditions, and Nate Ruess the lead singer started a new band with members of Steel Train and Anathallo simply titled fun. All jokes aside, Ruess’ fun. shows much of the same promise as The Format did five years back. Ruess sang his heart out, loudly demanding the crowd join their chorus of “I feel alive / alive.” The band even covered Queen. Ruess offered, “It wouldn’t be a festival without the ghost of Freddie Mercury,” before doing a spot-on rendition of “Radio Ga-Ga.”
