The latest in Red Bull’s all-out assault on the music scene saw Snoop Dogg and his group, The Snoopadelics (featuring none other than Bootsy Collins), go up against Texas natives Ghostland Observatory in their Soundclash format.
Despite the recent blow of Nate Dogg’s passing (which was greeted by the audience raising the peace sign in rememberence), Snoop was a true professional, taking to the stage in front of over 6,000 Spring Break revellers on South Padre Island, Texas. He fired out hits from across his full repertoire, and the crowd lapped it up. Meanwhile, at the other end of the event, Ghostland Observatory culled the majority of their material from their latest offering, Codename Rondo.
The whole idea behind this format is to showcase the varied talents of an act, encompassing different musical genres than their staple. This show promised an intriguing mix and truly delivered. Hearing Snoop covering Ghostland’s title track from the aforementioned LP was one particular highlight in the covers round, but the best moment was hearing Ghostlight take on Snoop’s hit “Drop It Like It’s Hot.” They made it seem like their own, much to the delight of both sets of fans. Another surreal moment saw both bands covering David Bowie’s oddball classic “Fame.” Who knew Snoop Dogg was an adept Bowie impersonator?
The finale saw both bands perform Snoop’s “I Want To Rock” on Snoop’s stage, and Mr. Dogg was clearly loving every minute of it. Upon greeting singer Aaron Behrens to his stage, Snoop proclaimed “we should get in the studio and make a record, for real,” to which Behrens laughed and agreed. So who knows? Maybe a Snoop/Ghostland collaboration album in 2012?
