At the Echoplex on 1/28/11 Monotonix frontman Ami Shalev stated the band’s current tour dates were their last. Wanting to set the record straight, mxdwn spoke with him via phone for an interview to ask him if Monotonix was in fact done or just on hiatus.
We’re just going to take a long break. Everybody is missing their family.
So it’s just a temporary hiatus. Will you be going back to touring afterwards?
I don’t know. We talked about that yet.
Obviously you guys have done absurd amounts of touring in the last few years. Are you all just homesick?
It’s not a matter of being homesick but that we want to be with our families. Well, it might be a little bit homesick. It seems like everyone wants to go do other things. We want to recharge our batteries. So we’re taking a break and then we’ll see what will happen.
Has your show booking taken a dive recently with the club owner’s knowledge of how intense your performances are?
Are you still getting banned from venues?
Not a lot. There were a few shows where the fire marshall shut us down early.
Do you ever find that the fire marshalls or whoever prevent you from playing at a show your booked to play?
There was an occasion where the fire marshall wouldn’t allow us to play on the ground with the audience. They wanted us to play on the stage, but we like to play on the floor. We ended up having to cancel that show.
Where was that at?
During a live show, do you find yourself picking from a repertoire of moves and stage theatrics or is everything spontaneous?
Every show is a different show for us. Before a show we pick out different songs but we never know what is going to happen.
You guys have no problem hanging from the rafters, playing on top of a crowd, or taking your music right outside the venue. Was there ever a time you stopped and said, “Hold on, this one is a little crazy.”
Once we had to stop the show and tell people to relax because it was getting too wild.
When you finish touring what do you look forward to doing?
I don’t know. I haven’t made any plans.
Do you plan to not make music?
I haven’t thought about it. I don’t plan that far ahead.
Would you consider making another album?
Why not? If it is the right time for it. Anything can happen.
