He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister at Bedrock, Echo Park, 12.17.10

The LA Record Holiday Party on December 17 was a yuletide feast of various bands hiding in every corner of the Bedrock Studios in Echo Park. Upstairs, holiday party-goers crammed into a small room to catch He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister, self-described as a “toe tappin’, tap dancing, hip shaking, hand clappin’, tambourine jangling, foot stompin’, cello bowin’, guitar strummin’, sing along family band.”

Surprisingly, the band lived up to its own hype. Led by siblings Rob and Rachel Kolar – get it? – the group features Satya Bhaba on cello and Lauren Brown, who kept rhythm by either tap dancing or playing the congas. The two Kolars also handle multiple instruments, with Rob on guitar, Rachel on percussion accessories, and both providing vocals. The resulting sound is an indescribable mash-up of folk, western swing and rock. Even more important, they genuinely looked like they were having fun and it shined through in their music.

He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister released their first album in October, a self-titled EP featuring seven songs.
